The Moroccan Football Federation announced, in an official statement published on Monday, that the medical examinations that international Ezzedine Ounahi underwent revealed a muscle injury in his leg, which necessitated his official withdrawal from the tournament.

The statement added that the player will immediately begin a treatment and rehabilitation program designed to recover from his injury.

Onahi had missed the confrontation with Tanzania yesterday, Sunday, which ended with Morocco’s victory with a clean goal, allowing the “Atlas Lions” to qualify for the round of 16.

Onahi appeared while watching the match between Morocco and Tanzania from the stands with crutches, in a scene that confirmed the extent of the injury that deprived the team of its services at a crucial moment.

Onahi is considered a pivotal element in the Moroccan national team’s lineup in the current continental championship, as he played a prominent role in Morocco topping Group A with 7 points, after its victory over the Comoros (2-0) and Zambia (3-0), and its draw with Mali (1-1).

Morocco aspires to achieve its continental dream by winning the African Cup of Nations title for the second time in its history, after its only coronation in 1976 in Ethiopia.

The “Atlas Lions” will await their competitor from Cameroon in the quarter-finals, in a confrontation scheduled for next Friday.
