Young Mum And Nursing Student Aidyn, 22, Dismissed Her Exhaustion – But After A Quick Shower Her World Turned Upside Down
What began as everyday exhaustion for a busy young mum would soon unravel into a life-altering diagnosis that forced Aidyn Clements to uproot her family and fight for her life.
At just 22, the Burnie-based Tasmanian mum was juggling full-time nursing studies, paid work and life with two young children.
Exhausted, stretched thin and constantly on the move, she assumed the crushing fatigue she felt was simply the reality of being a young working mother.
‘Before my diagnosis, life was very busy,’ Aidyn told Daily Mail.

‘I’ve always been the one to give it all in everything that I do.
‘I was striving to be a good mum, contribute financially and achieve high marks at university, so I put a lot of pressure on myself to succeed.’
Looking back, the symptoms were subtle. There was no sharp pain. No dramatic collapse. Just an overwhelming sense that something wasn’t quite right.
‘I was very exhausted, and I had said to Matt before my diagnosis how I felt off and tired, but I assumed it was just low iron, which is quite common in women.’

One evening in 2022, after putting her children to bed, Aidyn stepped into the shower. As she corrected her posture, her hand brushed against something unfamiliar beneath her left collarbone.
‘I felt a lump – it was hard, the size of a golf ball, but it was painless,’ she recalled.
‘Instinctively, I felt like something was wrong. My mind immediately went to cancer, it felt serious from the start.’

Her fiancé Matt felt it too, with the same certainty that it wasn’t something to ignore.
Within 24 hours, Aidyn had seen her GP, undergone urgent scans and received a call to return for results.
‘If the GP had not taken me seriously that day, it would have been a very different story.
‘Trusting my instincts played a huge role in saving my life.’

The initial imaging wasn’t diagnostic, but it was enough to raise alarm bells. When her GP called her back in, Aidyn asked him the question she already knew the answer to.
At just 22, the Burnie-based Tasmanian mum was juggling full-time nursing studies, paid work and life with two very young children when she was diagnosed with rare and aggressive cancer called Ewings sarcoma
‘I looked at him and asked, “Do you think I have cancer?” she said.
‘He looked me straight in the eyes and, with compassion in his voice, and he confirmed that he did think I had cancer.’

For the next seven weeks, Aidyn lived in limbo.
‘Life had to continue on as a mum. We hosted a baby shower, shared Easter, celebrated my son’s fourth birthday. I continued university and sat exams.’
‘Very few people knew what we were actually going through.’
At first, doctors suspected a soft tissue sarcoma. But when Aidyn was flown to Melbourne for further testing, the diagnosis became clearer and a lot confronting.

Ewings typically affects 10 to 20-year-olds and primarily involves the bone. In Aidyn’s case, it was in the soft tissues of her chest wall. This type of sarcoma is a cancer caused by a genetic translocation of chromosomes – not inherited and not preventable

Within weeks, her, Matt and their children packed up their lives and moved interstate.

Aidyn’s treatment was relentless: 14 cycles of chemotherapy across a gruelling 12 months, and major surgery to remove the tumour.
‘Getting through chemotherapy was like survival than living, but sleeping helped numb my reality and make time move faster,’ she recalled of that dark time.
In the midst of that upheaval, one lifeline made an immeasurable difference – stable accommodation close to her treating hospital, provided through the Sony Foundation You Can Stay program.
The initiative provides free, uncapped accommodation through Quest Apartment Hotels for 15-29-year-old regional cancer patients who must travel for treatment, easing both financial and emotional strain.

‘The apartment was quite literally a lifeline,’ Aidyn said.
‘It meant we didn’t have to stress about finding and funding accommodation while I underwent cancer treatment.’
Today, Aidyn is 26 and life hasn’t snapped back to how it was before, but she says that’s not necessarily a bad thing. ‘Surviving cancer has changed every part of who I am, and it’s taught me how to truly live
Against the odds, she also welcomed a third child – a daughter named Elka Florence – after doctors warned chemotherapy could impact her fertility

‘It really allowed me to focus on survival and my children. I seriously don’t know how we could have managed without it.’
For than 275 nights, the family stayed near the hospital which provided a rare sense of stability in a year defined by uncertainty.
When remission finally came, it wasn’t cinematic. It was a quiet moment Aidyn shared with Matt – and one she said brought a sense of relief that was ‘indescribable’.

‘I didn’t expect to fall pregnant naturally, so seeing those two lines brought every emotion at once.’
Now living in survivorship, Aidyn has one message for other young women.
