The Heart Nebula is a massive star formation region, and it was given this name because of its resemblance to the human heart. The center of the nebula includes a group of young, active stars whose rays carve the depths of the dense dust. It can be found only 5 degrees away from the bright star Segin in the constellation Cassiopeia. It can be spotted high above the northern horizon around midnight in October.

Beneath the giant cosmic core hangs a mass of dust and gas known informally as the “Fishhead Nebula,” due to its mysterious oval shape and the dark filament of dust that gives it an aquatic-like appearance.

Brecher collected light from the distant nebula scene from his home in Guelph, Canada, using an astronomical camera mounted on the Skywatcher Espert 70 EDX refracting telescope, over a period of more than 40 hours in September of this year.

The colorful scene was captured with the help of an array of astrophotography filters, each of which was designed to capture specific wavelengths of light to which individual colors were later assigned during the processing stage. The end result is a stunning snapshot of deep space, created from light particles that have traveled thousands of years to reach their destination.
