Actress Sydney Sweeney has made the surprising revelation that she’s considering taking up boxing after playing a fighter in her latest film.

Christythe American superstar’s new movie, officially released this week after premiering at the Toronto Film Festival in September.

Sweeney stars as legend of the sport Christy Martin, who spearheaded the rise of women’s boxing in the 1990s and even became the first woman to ever feature on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

It’s a rather different role to those previously played by the 28-year-old, whose parts inEuphoriaandAnyone But Yousaw her shoot to stardom.

But Sweeney says she ‘loved it’ and even revealed that she’s considering stepping into the ring herself in a new interview with Sportscasting.

‘There was a moment in the middle of filming where I was like, “Should I give it all up and fight because I love this?”‘, the Washington-born star said.

‘Christy (Martin) said sign me up so this isn’t as hypothetical as you actually think it is. Yeah, I’d totally do a charity bout, that’d be so sick.’

When quizzed about who she could face up against, Sweeney replied: ‘It’s a surprise, you’ll have to wait, I’m serious. You’ve got to stay tuned for the pay-per-view and you’ll see it. ‘

However, in news which may come as a surprise to some, Sweeney is far from a fighting novice.

The White Lotus actress actually spent much of her youth practicing kickboxing and grappling but says mastering boxing was a totally different challenge.

‘For about two-and-a-half months, I would weight train in the morning for an hour, box three hours in the middle of the day and then another hour of weight training at night,’ she said on Good Morning America.

‘I put on 35 pounds and it was hard. I started losing weight once I upped my boxing time and had to find that balance. I was just continually pounding and protein shakes.

‘I loved it. I worked hardest on that left hook and I think what would get me through a fight is that I can take a punch. I wouldn’t quit.’

When news of Sweeney portraying Christy Martin first aired, many critics tipped the actress for an Oscar.

But the film received mixed reviews after its release on Wednesday of this week, with some branding the movie ‘cliched’.

The BBC’s culture critic said the star’s off-screen image distracted from the film’s story, ratingChristya measly two stars out of five.

They penned: ‘It is impossible to forget that she is Sydney Sweeney in the cliché-ridden biopic Christy, as our hyperawareness of her off-screen image distracts us from what’s going on in the film.

‘A contradiction at the heart of Christy is that Sweeney is the main reason anyone is paying attention to the project, but her own high-profile celebrity makes it difficult to believe her as the character. Can she ever escape the real-life chatter around her?’

While The Guardian also awarded the film just two stars, with the publication’s critic writing: ‘Christy just isn’t nearly good enough, a by-the-numbers slog that fails to prove Sweeney’s status as a one to watch.

‘She’s a convincing force to be reckoned with inside of the ring, her training clearly having paid off as she confidently glides from fight to fight, but she can’t get us to believe in all that much outside of it, an actor still trying too visibly hard to make it all seem effortless.’
