Pumpkin pie is the most-ordered Thanksgiving dessert, according to Instacart data. This week, the San Francisco-based delivery app shared its overall ordering data from 2024 transactions to give us an overview of customers’ habits.

Given the widespread saturation of pumpkin in grocery stores this year, any mention of “pumpkin spice” might get some eye rolls. However, that flavor fatigue hasn’t affected actual Thanksgiving plans — the pie still dominates Instacart orders before the holiday. Instacart trends analyst Alex Orellana says many customers still stick to that familiar tradition.

“While many people claim (pumpkin pie’s) not their favorite, our data tells a different story. The share of orders for pumpkin pie surged than 2,000% the day before Thanksgiving, showing that pumpkin pie will likely be a part of the dessert table,” Orellana tells Food & Wine. “Other Thanksgiving staples like apple and pecan pie follow close behind, but there’s room for some flavor twists, too, in our top ten.”

Diverse tastes across the United States

Tastes vary widely across the United States — that’s a given. Perennial favorite pumpkin pie has a stronghold in the West (California, Oregon, and Washington), while preferences vary greatly in the South. Shoppers in Georgia, Maryland, and North Carolina often pick sweet potato pie, whereas those in Texas and Mississippi favor pecan pie.

Over in the Midwest, the oh-so-sweet French Silk Pie reigns supreme in Illinois, Iowa, and Missouri. Meanwhile, Instacart customers in New England typically prefer cream pies, especially in Maine and Massachusetts. Peanut Butter Pie, a salty and chocolatey dessert, is a top choice among Pennsylvanians.

To reach these findings, Instacart analyzed the share of orders containing these types of pies from Thanksgiving week last year. Researchers compared the order shares for each state, using formulas to identify which pie was the most ordered overall.

Procrastinators rely on Instacart

There was a notable surge in Instacart orders on the day before Thanksgiving last year — and Instacart has the data to prove exactly what those procrastinators were ordering. On the day before Thanksgiving, orders of sweet potato pie jumped 2,691% above the yearly average.

Other last-minute Thanksgiving deliveries are most likely to include classics like sweet potato, pumpkin, and pecan pies. Instacart observed a steady rise in apple pie orders throughout the entire season, while a small but mighty group of customers ordered cherry pie before the big dinner. It’s not just the Thanksgiving rush, either: Instacart data shows that customers also order last-minute pies around Christmas.
