Russia Is Developing Simulators To Train Astronauts For Flights To The ROS Orbital Station

Regarding the topic, Sergey Babin, Director of the Institute of Automation and Electrical Measurements of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, said: “Work began this year on developing simulators to train astronauts of the promising Russian orbital station, which is supposed to be deployed in space between 2027 and 2033. We will participate in this project in cooperation with the Russian company Softlab.”

He added: “Our institute currently has two laboratories to develop virtual reality systems. The new simulators will be based on virtual reality systems that simulate the ROS station environment and its control systems.

Most of these devices are related to displaying, controlling, and transmitting data. The new devices will be different from those currently used to train astronauts on the International Space Station.”

The Institute of Automation and Electrical Measurements of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences was famous for developing many space training devices during the Soviet era, and contributed to the development of devices to train astronauts to use reusable Soviet manned spacecraft than once, including devices to train astronauts to land Buran vehicles and handle space payloads.

Russia plans to launch the first unit of the ROS station in 2027, which will be a scientific unit and a power generation unit. Until 2030, it is planned to launch two units, with the three units forming the basis of the station. In the second phase, between 2031 and 2033, it is planned to add TsM1 and TsM2 units to the station.

Roscosmos previously indicated that the establishment of the (ROS) orbital station will ensure the continuity of the Russian program for manned space flights, and will relieve Russia of the services of the International Space Station. It will also use the new station as a platform for testing new space technologies.
