Thanks to my time spent visiting family in Northern Germany, I’ve been fortunate to enjoy a variety of traditional German delicacies over the years, from crispy schnitzels and tangy potato salad to freshly baked pretzels we would pick up from the bakery in the mornings.

I often crave these comforting dishes while stateside, and it can be difficult to find excellent versions of store-bought German foods while in the United States. Unless you happen to have one popular grocery chain near you.

The Germany-based supermarket Lidl — which now has nearly 200 locations in the U.S. — is known for both its low prices and vast selection of German products that you can stock up on year-round. From staples like spätzle to seasonal treats that will transport you straight to Germany’s Christmas markets, you can find everything you need here to build a complete German feast.

German Pretzel

Walk into a Lidl anywhere in the world and you’ll find its golden brown German Pretzels displayed in the bakery section. These classic pretzels feature a soft, chewy interior and a delightfully crisp crust that’s been sprinkled with salt crystals.

While delicious on their own, try dipping the pretzels in mustard or a big batch of beer cheese. If you want something that’s suited to sandwiches, Lidl offers German Pretzel Rolls too, which would be perfect for ham and cheese sliders.

Alpine Festival Spätzli

If there’s one meal I’ll never leave Germany without eating at least once, it’s spätzle. These German egg noodles are most often enjoyed tossed in a simple, buttery sauce and can serve as a main dish or a side to dishes like schnitzel or bratwurst.

This is far from the only way to enjoy spätzle, and you may come across a wide range of ways to serve the dish. I’m partial to käsespätzle — made with melted cheese, butter, and caramelized onions — a dish that’s easy to recreate at home with Lidl’s Alpenfest Spätzli.

Original Potato Salad

When it comes to store-bought potato salads, Lidl’s Original Potato Salad happens to be one of the best on the market. Similar to the cold potato salads you’ll find in Northern Germany, this premade potato salad combines potatoes, onions, red bell peppers, and diced dill pickles, all tossed in a creamy dressing made of mayonnaise, mustard, vinegar, and a touch of sugar for some subtle sweetness. Some of the potatoes are lightly mashed while others are left in larger chunks, giving you the best of both worlds.

Favorina Pfeffernüsse (German Christmas Cookies)

‘Tis the season for festive treats, and the Favorina pepper nuts capture the holiday spirit perfectly. Infused with spices like cinnamon, ginger, and cardamom, these iconic Christmas cookies are cherished in Germany. A coating of chocolate on the exterior adds a little sweetness to balance out the spice and provides a nice textural contrast with the cookies’ soft, chewy center.

Lidl Preferred Selection Traditional Soup Noodles

In addition to spätzle, you can grab another excellent egg noodle from Lidl. These Traditional Soup Noodles are imported from Germany as part of the Lidl Preferred Selection, an award-winning product line that’s “carefully curated by our team of international experts,” according to the store’s website.

Especially during colder months, these delicate egg noodles are ideal for adding a little heft to any soup or stew you’re simmering. The soup noodles are on the thinner side compared to the spätzle, so they’re best suited for floating in a broth rather than serving on their own.

German Sourdough Bread

From the whole-grain-based whole wheat bread to chewy pretzels, Germany has quite a few hearty breads that hold respected roles in its cuisine. You can find several of these at Lidl, but we recommend starting with the German Sourdough Bread.

Crafted with rye flour, wheat flour, rye sourdough, yeast, water, and salt, this loaf will have a different texture and flavor profile from the sourdough you’re likely used to. Its high rye content yields a slightly denser bread with complex, nutty, and malty notes. We won’t tell you what to do, but making a grilled cheese on this would be divine.

Perlenbacher Hefeweizen

It would be a mistake not to pick up some German beer while at Lidl, and this traditional Bavarian wheat beer is an excellent option. One beer reviewer and Lidl shopper notes that the “Perlenbacher Hefeweizen pours to a cloudy yellow-orange color with a thick, fluffy white head and a vibrant nose of spicy clove and a hint of banana.”

This particular beer was the silver medal winner in the 2021 New York International Beer Competition, so you know it’s going to be a good one. At $13 for a six-pack (just over $2 per bottle), it’s also an affordable option if you’re in search of a high-quality, imported German beer.
