A New Report Just Revealed America’s Holiday Drink Map

  • A new report shows that hot chocolate is the most searched-for holiday drink in the United States, leading in 13 states, with apple cider and the Espresso Martini close behind.
  • Regional preferences vary widely, with the South having the most diverse mix — ranging from French 75s to Winter Aperol Spritzes — while Midwesterners prefer traditional cold-weather comfort drinks like hot chocolate and hot toddies.
  • The study highlights how holiday beverage interest spans both alcoholic and nonalcoholic options, revealing national enthusiasm for cozy classics and festive cocktails.

The holidays are a season of indulgence — and that’s especially true for the beverage spread. Whether warming a mug of hot chocolate or shaking up a round of espresso martinis, they’re a foundational piece to holiday merriment.

Hot chocolate is officially the most popular holiday drink in the United States, according to a new report from Coffeeness. The Germany-based site, which has reviewed coffee tools and covered the industry since 2008, released a holiday beverage report this week. It breaks down the top-loved beverage in each state — based on Google search data — and compares it to national tastes. And yes, the Espresso Martini trend is still holding firm.

As for methodology, Coffeeness’ research team used Google Trends search interest data from a 12-month period. The search terms, which included terms for the country’s most popular “festive and holiday” drinks, were observed from last year’s Christmas season. They then used relative search values to identify the top interests for a variety of beverages in each state.

Researchers considered both alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks in the study, providing a broader view of the holiday beverage landscape. While this can’t reveal exactly what residents in each state are actually drinking, it offers some clues — and surprisingly, eggnog wasn’t on anyone’s list.

Traditional favorites are still atop lists

Americans clearly haven’t lost their love for the holiday classics — especially hot chocolate and apple cider.

These two cozy drinks topped the charts in Coffeeness’ survey, claiming the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, respectively. Hot chocolate is the favorite beverage in 13 states, while apple cider leads in 11 states. An elegant Espresso Martini ties for second place, ranking as the top drink in states such as Colorado, Kentucky, and New Jersey.

(We’d be willing to bet there’s some variation in the type of spirit chosen in that tipple, but the survey doesn’t divulge.)

Further down the list, the French 75 and Amaretto Sour piqued the interest in four states apiece. Two warm-weather states (Arizona and Hawaii) seem to regard the Mimosa as a holiday cocktail, while Texans prefer the unconventional Bellini for celebrations.

Tastes differ across the South and Southwest

As with other food and drink reports, this study found significant differences between regions across the United States. Clusters of states share common preferences — like Apple Cider in the Pacific Northwest — while some areas have varied tastes that set them apart.

“The South is the most varied,” Coffeeness outreach managerIvana Zectells Food & Wine. “You see everything from French 75s in Georgia to Espresso Martinis in South Carolina, Louisiana, and Kentucky. Tennessee chose a Winter Aperol Spritz, and Texas stood out with the Bellini. Warmer climates and strong brunch culture seem to influence the mix of choices.”

Comfort reigns supreme among Midwesterners, who mostly prefer hot chocolate and, in Minnesota’s case, a hot toddy. Classic cold-weather drinks are also top choices on their beverage list and search history.
