Gremlins 3 Slammed As Premiere Date Revealed… Nearly Four Decades After The Sequel
Gremlins 3 slammed as premiere date revealed… nearly four decades after the sequel
Gremlins 3 is officially in the works much to the unease of diehard fans.
The continuation of the franchise has been slated to hit theaters on November 19, 2027, making it almost four decades since the sequel debuted on the big screen.
According to reports, Steven Spielberg is returning to executive produce the movie while Harry Potter filmmaker Chris Columbus is set to direct and produce.
David Zaslav, the CEO and president of Warner Bros. Discovery, confirmed that Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein will co-write the screenplay.
Further details, including a plot description and cast, have yet to be revealed.
The film’s announcement has sparked somewhat of a lukewarm response on social media with some fans begging for original ideas in Hollywood.
Others have voiced upset over an apparent lack of involvement from Joe Dante, who directed the first two movies.
Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, one vented: ‘A part of me is intrigued, but I wish it was kinda left alone. It’s been 25 years, what is the life expectancy of a Mogwai?’
A third Gremlins film has been confirmed – and will be released in theaters November 19, 2027
Steven Spielberg will be back to executive produce and Chris Columbus will direct and produce
Echoing a similar sentiment, another fumed: ‘I love Gremlins. I absolutely love both of them. But this constant remake, revisit, rehash, nostalgia s*** needs to STOP. Every film is like this or it’s f***ing Marvel. Can we just try thinking instead?’
‘Why? Gremlins 2 was terrible,’ added a third.
‘I am happy Gremlins 3 is finally happening but no Joe Dante involvement at all right now is a bummer,’ a fourth continued.
‘No Joe Dante?’ asked another. ‘Gremlins is his franchise I don’t know how you could do it without him.’
‘Enough with these forced sequels,’ blasted a sixth. ‘Without Joe Dante, what’s even the point? It’s just another forced cash grab that will probably have way too much executive meddling.’
A seventh added: ‘Not bringing Joe Dante back is genuinely such a huge mistake.’
Daily Mail has reached out to Dante for comment.
In 2020, Columbus spoke about his plans for a third film in the comedy-horror series during an interview with Collider.
Columbus revealed in 2020 that he had written a script for a third Gremlins movie
Social media users have noticed that Joe Dante appears to be missing from the project
Fan response to the film has been particularly lukewarm
‘I would love to do it,’ he said at the time. ‘I wrote a script, so there is an existing script.
‘We’re working out some rights issues right now, so we’re just trying to figure out when the best time to make that film would be.’
When asked whether the famously puppet-based creatures would be updated with modern computer-generated technology, Columbus answered: ‘I would still do it the same way – I would do it as tangible puppets, not CGI.’
The first Gremlins film was released in 1984. Written by Columbus, the movie ignited his illustrious career in the industry.
It was produced by Spielberg and directed by Dante, working off Columbus’ original screenplay.
The plot centered on a boy named Billy who inadvertently breaks three important rules concerning his new pet Gremlin named Gizmo and unleashes a horde of malevolently mischievous monsters on a small town.
The original earned over $150 million at the US box office, paving the way for the 1990 sequel that Columbus did not write. That film only earned $41 million.
Although best known for kick-starting the Harry Potter franchise, Columbus’ most recent work is the Netflix film The Thursday Murder Club, adapted from Richard Osman’s book of the same name.
After the release of both Gremlins films, Dante went on to direct the TV show Hawaii Five-0, as well as the films Matinee (1993), Looney Tunes: Back in Action (2003), The Hole (2009), and Burying the Ex (2014).
recently, he served as a consultant on the television series, Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, for the past two years.
